Telemark skiing in the Oetz Valley Alps

One of the oldest skiing techniques in the world

The ancient Norwegians learnt that getting around in snow using the Telemark technique was not only efficient but also a lot of fun. Explore a new way of skiing in Obergurgl with our experienced ski instructors.

Whether or not you learn with one pole or try out the popular two-pole technique it’s certainly an exciting winter sport. The specialised equipment consists of a shoe that bends in the toe area, and a Telemark binding where the heel of your boot is detached from the ski. This detachment, similar to a ski-touring binding, allows you to kneel as you turn, creating a deep smooth turn.

Learn how to Telemark - right from the start

To initiate a turn from a neutral base position, increased pressure is placed on the bottom ski that is then actively led to the front. The mountain ski automatically runs through to the back which then completes the classic Telemark stance. It’s not only the professionals changing to this very physically demanding sport but we’ve noticed it’s an emerging trend. Even advanced snow sports enthusiasts are discovering Telemark skiing as a main sport for themselves.

Skiing open terrain in the Oetz Valley

For the expert skier, skiing in the open landscape certainly comes recommended. The special Telemarking equipment and technique guarantees skiing excitement especially in untracked powder snow. Come and enjoy our new Ski Show “skiVolution” on Tuesday night at 9.00 pm on the Festkogel, – demonstrated by our instructors amongst other spectacles is the very interesting Telemarking technique.
